ANTH 29905. ANTHROPOLOGY OF MEDIA AND PERFORMANCE. This course examines the sociocultural practices of media and performance around the world. Beginning with an exploration of early ethnography, we will trace the history and development of the ideas that shaped depictions and knowledge of so-called "cultural others." With this grounding, we will explore how those who were the subjects of this documentation subverted relations of power, reversing the gaze back onto ethnographers. We will trace anthropologys move in the latter half of the 20th century away from dominant ideas about "culture," and will explore contemporary media and performance as sites of struggle over social meanings and rights. Throughout this course we will study how media and performance are harnessed to reproduce and challenge systemic inequalities. Additional course topics include: soundscapes, art and activism, the visual politics of suffering and aid, and global youth cultures. [HSS]
